2020 has flipped the music industry upside down, but not all musicians are letting that hold them back. In fact, some have taken up new direction from unplanned inspiration, finding new successes that may have never been discovered if it wasn’t for the lockdown. Perhaps the silver lining with nothing else to do is trying something new!
Check out Seattle based musician Patrick Galactic. Quarantine life meant no more live shows for awhile, which was a full time gig for him, but he didn’t let that slow him down at all. Within a month of the first official lockdown he launched a live streaming show called Weird at Night. The show is co-produced with his long time friend, film maker Blazinspace, contributing a variety of creative content, visual effects and intriguing characters. Matt Ashworth keeps us current with Nada Mucho music news. The show also features regular performances from Terry Monstrosity, an up-and-coming local hip hop artist, kicking off each episode with a fresh new performance. Good friends from Astral Media Lab provided equipment to help get Weird at Night up and running.
WAN showcases a variety of local artists, musicians, comedians and film makers through in-depth interviews, performances, music reviews and premiers. They also focus on discovering and sharing new talent of all genres in the Seattle area and beyond.
The show steers far away from mainstream, jumping between straight forward entertainment based “newsy news” to intimate musical performances, fresh music videos and experimental short films. So what makes the show weird? They mix in some very avant interludes which could be described like attending a Mad Hatter tea party with guests Edgar Allen Poe, Pee Wee Herman, the Muppets and perhaps David Lynch on happy pills.
The show is weird. Very weird… and it’s brilliant! Perfectly balanced between awkward, hilarious and super intelligent, they may not know it yet, but Patrick and Blazinspace are building a new “virtual” underground scene thats growing a very loyal cult following.
It was serendipitous that my insomnia lead me to Weird at Night.
And in case you’re wondering… yes, I’ve joined the cult.
Streaming on Twitch every Tuesday and Saturday at midnight! Check out Weird at Night here.
